Matter
- There are 3 states of
matter: solid, liquid and gas.
- All matter is made of
particles.
- The particles in a solid
are closer together than those in a liquid.
- The particles in a liquid
are much closer together than those in a gas.
- Liquid and gas particles
can move and mix without being stirred. This is called diffusion.
- Particles in a solid
vibrate but are fixed in place. Particles in a liquid move about. Particles
in a gas move about very quickly.
- Gas particles hit the
walls of their container causing pressure.
- Gases can be turned into
liquids by compressing them.
- The names of the change
of state processes.
- A substance which
dissolves is called soluble.
- The liquid which
dissolves a substance is called a solvent.
- The substance dissolved
in a solvent is called a solute.
- The solubility of a
substance varies in different solvents.
- The solubility of a
substance changes at different temperatures.
What you should be able to do.
- List some solids, liquids
and gases.
- Heat fizzy water.
- Make a timing device
using stomach powder.
- Test differences between
solids, liquids and gases.
- Make predictions about
gases.
- Record the temperature as
a liquid changes to a solid.
- Plot a graph showing the
temperature change as a liquid changes to a solid.
- Investigate which solvent
is best at removing stains.
