Sight & Sound
What you should know.
- A geologist is someone
who studies rocks.
- Igneous, sedimentary and
metamorphic are the three main rock groups.
- The earth is about 4500
million years old.
- Fossils are the remains
of plants and animals.
- Large crystals form when
a liquid cools slowly. Small crystals form when a liquid cools quickly.
- Weathering is caused by
wind, water and changes in temperature.
- Erosion is caused by
caused by waves, rivers, glaciers, wind and rain.
- Rock particles are
transported by rivers, glaciers, the sea and wind.
- Rock particles eventually
become deposited to form sediments.
- Soils are often formed
from sediments.
- The rock cycle involves
sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous processes.
What you should be able to
do.
- Test rocks and record
information on Rock Data Cards.
- Describe the ways in
which different types of rock were formed.
- make crystals of
different sizes from salol.
- Test the effect of acid
on different rocks.
- Look for signs of
weathering around the school.
- Investigate the erosion
of sand by water.
- Observe different types
of soil with a hand lens.
- Separate out the
different parts of soil by settling out in water.
- Investigate some
differences between two soil samples.
